Is motion in flight simulators effective in pilot training? Full motion flight simulators (FFS) are much more expensive than fixed base flight simulators (FBS). Many smaller airlines and many flight training organizations (FTO’s) do not have the means to invest in a Full Flight Simulator.

The development of enhanced visual systems and motion cueing on fixed base flight simulators have triggered several studies to see what effects full motion flight simulators have in different stages of pilot training.

In the paper A summary of studies conducted on the effect of motion in flight simulator pilot training, Peter John Davison, B.Sc., Ph.D., summarizes the most relevant studies related to the effectiveness of full motion flight simulators in pilot training.

The studies summarized were carried out by the U.S Department of Transport (DOT), VOLPE, and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and contains references with links to the original studies.
